What is Gastro-Esophageal Reflex Disease (GERD)?
Almost everyone has experienced the reflux of stomach juices into the esophagus. This is felt as heartburn. Frequent and intense bouts constitute the condition known as GERD. GERD is related to an incompetent lower esophageal sphincter. This is a band of muscle at the end of the esophagus that acts as a valve preventing juices, which are acidic, from moving up from the stomach.
What are the Symptoms and side effects of GERD?
The cells lining the esophagus are not built to withstand such a constant acid bath and react with irritation, inflammation and even abnormal changes within the cells themselves. The most common adult symptoms are heartburn, regurgitation and dysphagia (trouble swallowing). Fortunately, medications such as antacids can make stomach acid almost disappear and greatly reduce the dangers of GERD.
